India ODI

The ODI History of India

India will host the 2023 Cricket World Cup and hope to make home advantage count so that they can lift the trophy again. The Men in Blue were able to prosper on their own patch in 2011 when they co-hosted the tournament with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

The Indians were able to navigate their way through to the final where they lined up at the Wankhede Stadium against co-hosts Sri Lanka. With a raucous crowd mainly supporting the former, then it was a six-wicket victory and this was the second triumph for a cricket-mad nation that take their national sport very seriously.

Wind the clock back to 1983 and India were successful for the first time in the Cricket World Cup. It was the third edition of this One Day International tournament, with India able to beat West Indies in the final by 43 runs which was quite an emphatic margin.

That particular clash was at Lord’s in London, although India then had to wait until 2003 before they would reach the next final. South African hosted this particular competition and the stage was set in Johannesburg for a thrilling match against Australia although it ended up being strongly in favour of the Baggy Greens.

The Aussies were able to post an outstanding total of 359/2 which was always a big ask for India to reel in their opponents and they fell short when being skittled out for 234 runs.

Who Holds the ODI Records for India?

Other impressive batsmen include Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and MS Dhoni. Ganguly has notched 11,221 runs for India when it comes to One Day International cricket in a blue Indian shirt, with Dravid scoring 10,889 runs and he’s closely followed by Dhoni who stands on 10,599.
