Bangladesh ODI

The ODI History of Bangladesh

At the time of writing, Bangladesh have made six appearances at the Cricket World Cup. Despite not being involved in the early incarnations of the tournament, they were able to make their bow at the 1999 Cricket World Cup and have been a permanent fixture of the competition since then.

Bangladesh gave a good account of themselves at the 1999 World Cup and actually won two of their five group games despite not qualifying for the next stage. They claimed their first ever win against Scotland on 24 May 1999 and a 22-run victory was recorded in Edinburgh which was widely celebrated.

However, the 31 May 1999 was an even more monumental occasion where Bangladesh were able to topple Pakistan in a shock win. It was a 62-run victory at the County Ground in Northampton, with the country highly satisfied with the first bow in the competition.

At the 2003 Cricket World Cup, there was more of a struggle and the team finished bottom of their group having not achieved a victory. However, the 2007 World Cup was their most successful thanks to a strong performance during the group stage in West Indies.

Bangladesh were grouped with Sri Lanka, India and Bermuda, with a five-wicket victory over the Indians upsetting the cricket betting odds. Having been thrashed by Sri Lanka in their next game, it was then a comfortable seven wicket win against Bermuda.

However, the team then went through to the Super 8 stage where the team only managed one win and that came against South Africa. A 67-run was achieved although Bangladesh could only finish second-bottom in their section.

In the 2011 World Cup, the Tigers were able to win three of their six matches but that wasn’t enough to get over the line and reach the next phase. Four years later, Bangladesh were able to finish fourth in Pool A of the 2015 Cricket World Cup. Finishing above England was a fine achievement although they were then heavily beaten by India at the quarter final stage.

Who Holds the ODI Records for Bangladesh?

The highest team total ever recorded by the Bangladesh ODI team was an impressive 333/8 that came against Australia on 20 June 2019 at Nottingham. Meanwhile the biggest individual score was 176 runs racked up by Liton Das against Zimbabwe on 6 March 2020 when the teams met at Sylhet.

There have been some fine individual bowling performances and the best bowling figures are currently shared. Stats of 6/26 were achieved not only by Mashrafe Mortaza against Kenya on 15 August 2006 at Nairobi (Gymkhana) but also Rubel Hossain against New Zealand on 29 October 2013 at Dhaka.

Tamim Iqbal was able to score 7,826 runs between 2007-2022, with this making him the top Bangladesh run scorer, while Shakib Al Hasan having managed 6,755 runs and other notable batsman was Mushfiqur Rahim is next in the pecking order with 6,697.
