England ODI

The ODI History of England

England are one of the leading One Day International nations, with this team having hosted the 1975 and 1979 World Cups, while they also co-hosted the tournament with Wales in 1983. However, they had to wait until much later to achieve a maiden ODI World Cup victory.

Hosting the tournament once again in 2019, England finally cast off their bridesmaid tag when landing a dramatic victory in the final. They clashed with New Zealand at Lord’s and the two sides played out a tense encounter before the former were able to win in the Super Over.

Previously to this, England had regularly fallen short in the Cricket World Cup, with the team having finished runner-up on three occasions. The first of these came in 1979 when West Indies trounced their opponents by 92 runs, while the English played out a closer final when losing to Australia in the 1987 World Cup final.

The third unsuccessful foray into the World Cup final came when England were able to navigate their way into the final match before clashing with Pakistan at Melbourne Cricket Ground and the team suffered a 22-run defeat.

England’s 2019 success announced themselves as a major player when winning the 2019 tournament, with the team able to beat Australia at Edgbaston by a comfortable margin although it was a different story against the Kiwis where Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer were able to get the team over the line.

Who Holds the ODI Records for England?

England have a number of One Day International records and the highest run total ever recorded in a match was an incredible 481 runs against Australia in 2018, with the lowest ebb coming against the same opponents in 2001 when this proud cricket nation could only muster 86 runs off 32.4 overs.

At the time of writing, Eoin Morgan has made the most ODI appearances for England and many of them have seen him captain the team. Indeed, he has been the longest serving captain over 124 matches and is regarded as one of the best to represent the team in this format.

Morgan is close to racking up 7,000 runs for England at One Day International level which is quite a feat, while Joe Root currently boasts the best average and 51.33 is going to be hard to surpass considering that the former Test captain has achieved such a high benchmark.

Jos Buttler has the best strike rate in 118.66 although the highest individual score was recorded by Jason Roy when the opener managed 180 runs against Australia at Melbourne Cricket Ground in 2018.

Bowling-wise, James Anderson has notched 269 wickets at the time of writing. Mike Hendrick is the bowler who holds the best average figure with 19.45, while Paul Collingwood has the best stat as far as individual bowling is concerned. He managed figures of 6/31 against Bangladesh at Trent Bridge in 2005.
